Troutnut's Profile

Jason_neuswanger
Location: Fairbanks, AK
Real name: Jason Neuswanger

I'm a trout fanatic who loves the scientific end of the sport, as you can see from Troutnut.com. I dove into fly fishing head-first in the summer of 2003 and haven't looked back. Currently I'm studying juvenile Chinook salmon in the Yukon drainage at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for my M.S. degree.

I also created Hacklehead.com from scratch.

I wrote a longer bio on Troutnut.com here:

I really like the choice of wing feathers here.

I love the wings! I'm not sure how well they'd cast, but I've never seen someone cut feather wings to such a realistic profile.

Cool -- I'd really like to know what that's made from! Is that body tightly spun and clipped deer hair or wool or something?

Very nice lively-looking spinner pattern with traditional materials... and great proportions.

It doesn't imitate anything... it just works. Some have suggested that it's a very approximate imitation of a cased caddis larva, but I think they're really reaching for an excuse to feel better about using it. It's really just an effective attractor pa

Caleb -- NICE! I've never seen such an original and striking artistic take on the traditional Catskill dry fly style. Good name, too. And excellent job on the photo.

What's even scarier is that he actually fishes flies that look like this. :) I wouldn't let this thing anywhere near the water without a 0X tippet...

It is pretty good for a spinner pattern as far as visibility goes. The wings look white when they're dry, but they do take on a more transparent look when they're wet, which is good for realism but makes the fly a bit less visible than you'd expect.
