I'm a trout fanatic who loves the scientific end of the sport, as you can see from Troutnut.com. I dove into fly fishing head-first in the summer of 2003 and haven't looked back. Currently I'm studying juvenile Chinook salmon in the Yukon drainage at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for my M.S. degree.
I also created Hacklehead.com from scratch.
I wrote a longer bio on Troutnut.com here:
Troutnut.com Fly Fishing - Thousands of closeup stream insect pictures, landscape photos, and articles about matching every hatch you've probably heard of.

| Classic Catskill Dries | finished |
In a competition with novel realistic flies elegant classic salmon patterns, it's important not to lose appreciation for the simple beauty of a well-tied Hendrickson or a Quill Gordon. This one's for them. |
| Grand Opening - $50 Orvis Gift Certificate | finished |
To help this brand new site get off the ground, I'm offering prizes for the two highest-rated flies submitted in the first month. This contest is open to anyone, and to all types of flies. |
| Fly Fishing Blogger Showdown! | finished |
If you run a fishing blog, we know you can type -- a lot. But how well can you tie? Better than that other guy with the higher Google pagerank whose posts aren't nearly as insightful and witty as yours? Here's your chance to stick it to him, and make him jealous of your prizes. |
| Beta Tester Contest | finished |
All flies in the beta test stage of HackleHead should be entered into this contest for testing purposes. |

Kinda ugly, but very original, and it looks good where it counts -- floating right, hooking well, etc. One of the cooler flies I've seen recently. |

Nctrout, the answer is probably about a size 14. The transformation from larva to pupa to adult uses plenty of energy, but the insect isn't eating anything during that time, so it shrinks. Mature larvae are bigger than the adults. |

Thanks Craig. I'd love to hear more about the origins of this fly and the original way to tie it. I learned of it second-hand through the Wisflyfishing forum, and just knew it was a popular local pattern in the Driftless Area. |

I see you've been reading Lloyd's book... nice work! Especially on the legs. I would say the wings are a bit too short and the head is too large, but you're well on your way to some kickass flies. |

Whether this can really be called a "fly" instead of a "model" or not, it clearly took a lot of skill to make. My hat's off to the tier and/or sculptor.
