Largest in a series of Mayfly Dun patterns I tie using the Umbrella hooks. I tie the extended bodies using 8lb monofilament wrapped with whatever dubbin material I use for the fly. Main difference I've made has been the hackle - where I used to wrap it around the vertical post, I now figure-8 wrap it around the thorax. Believe it or not it seems to float much better.
Hook: Large Umbrella
Thread: Olive
Abdomen: 8lb test monofilament wrapped with light olive dubbin
Abdomen overwrap: Pheasant tail fibers, light side up
Ribbing: Danville's gold fine wire
Wing: Slate gray CDC, doubled
Tail: Green dyed Elk fibers
Hackle: Olive, figure-8 tied around the thorax
Note: Western Green Drakes have massive wings and they are splayed for drying as they float on the water. I use the butt ends of the Pheasant tail fibers and pull them back between the wings and then again forward to tie them off.
Bob – Maybe I haven’t kept up on the latest tying styles and techniques because this is new to me. The fact that it is unique to me, and the other entries to date, gains my advancing vote.
